How To Ask Tarot Questions

My spiritual work has inspired me to write this post as I notice not all of my clients ask questions due to possibly not knowing how to even ask tarot questions. Asking tarot questions before or during your reading can be beneficial in adding to your overall messages and experience. It guarantees your presence in the reading and allows you to have more control over the reading’s focus. Clear, direct questions can help your reader channel messages for you that are easier to understand and bring meaning. Lately I’ve been working with my sugars (my regular clients) and they have been coming up with the most stellar questions for their reading. Very detailed, yet questions that leave room for interpretation and are easy and straightforward to ask. You also help your reader out a ton when you are prepared with your own questions. When questions are not pre-written by the client, based on the service they are getting I write my own.  It’s also much easier to formulate questions if there’s context provided. Context isn’t needed because ultimately I will see what I need to and deliver what you need to hear, but it can help me know what to ask based on your wishes.

Become a sugar yourself and book a personal reading. If you haven’t already, read Sugar’s Deck Guide to learn the difference between decks and which ones to buy. Before booking a service with us, be sure to read the ultimate guide on booking with Sugar Tarot LLC.

  1. Ask yourself what/why you want to know

Begin to formulate your questions based off what type of reading you’re getting/doing (love/career/finance/health/creativity/family/business/other) and what your goal for the reading is. Is there a situation you need help navigating? Do you just seek general guidance or do you need assistance improving something in particular? Curious to learn and develop your own spiritual gifts? Tarot is your help desk to all your spiritual/material wants and needs. When seeking answers from the tarot or Spirit intent is everything. Your questions are for you to be aware of your own role in the situation. Even if you are getting a reading involving another person or their energy happens to appear throughout the reading, the focus of your questions should always remain on you. Tarot reading’s purpose is not to read other people’s minds or predict their behaviors. Although tarot can pick on a person’s energy, it may not directly explain how they’re feeling or why someone is doing/not doing something. You cannot use tarot to manipulate a situation or a person. Think of tarot as the phone line leading directly to your guides to ask them for help. It provides messages on what your spiritual guides want you to pay attention to and what is best for you to know at that given time.

 2. Don’t be shy

You know that saying “scared money don’t make no money”? Exactly. Spirit will not provide answers to questions asked indirectly, through force, or from fear.  It’s okay to ask very deep, personal questions you wouldn’t feel comfortable asking a professional outside of spiritual work. If you want to know, just ask literally. Spirit will know what you’re referring to and the answer is the answer whether it makes sense initially or not. Know that trust is rooted in transparency. Most readers like myself have heard it all and are never here to judge. The goal is to provide you answers we’re told and guide you through them. Beware that an unclear question will most likely equal an unclear answer. Your questions don’t have to be super long or specific, your team is always present during readings even if you are not present with the reader. I feel the energies of the spiritual team I’m working with and some can be quiet or hesitant at first, they are always cooperative and welcoming to me.

 3. Limit Yes/No questions

Try not to ask all yes/no questions. There are ways to interpret a yes or no in the tarot by taking reversals as no and upright as yes, but it’s much more effective to ask a more open ended question. Instead of starting your question with “Will”, “When”, “Should” try to begin with “What”, “How”, “Where”, “Why” as it opens up more possibilities for an actual answer. Certain starters like “Why” can be really great in aiding in your reflection or processing a situation after it has occurred. Asking “Will” can put pressure on the answer you want to hear. Spirit is not here to validate. Starting with “Should” implies you want Spirit to make decisions for you instead of helping you towards the answer yourself. Tarot reading is only effective if every party participates with a sound mind. This means your reader is present to transmit what they’re channeling, both spiritual teams are present for protection and to provide answers, and you as the client/person being read is also present eager to receive what you’re being told, ready to take necessary action afterwards in your life. I notice forcing a particular answer will have the opposite effect and you just won’t get any answers or answers that clearly don’t make sense. Spirit has a nice sense of humor and the more you read with tarot you’ll understand exactly what I mean. If you’re asking a yes/no question, but the answer is very specific, chances are you will end up confused and not get the answers you seek. If the question doesn’t allow room for multiple messages to come through at once, it isn’t too strong and you should probably re-phrase.

Beware that an unclear question will most likely equal an unclear answer.

 4. This might take time, take yours

Do not rush to get a reading. Spirit can tell when you’re panicking and seeking answers just to validate yourself or using the occult to distract yourself. Try to regulate your emotions and sit with them in healthy ways before you run to pick up your cards at every slightest inconvenience. Most people struggle with getting the answers they need from tarot because the question being asked is too focused on the future or getting all the answers in one reading. For example, instead of asking “When will I earn a million dollars?” ask “How can I maximize my income or create a new one?”, “What skills do I need to focus on in order to continue to build wealth?”, or “In what ways can I save more money?”. Depending on the complexity of the answer you seek and how big your question is, it may take more than one reading session with your reader to uncover all. This is why it’s important to build a connection with your reader so you can trust them doing this for you. If you are reading for yourself be sure to take your time practicing and start with smaller spreads until you feel comfortable reading more energies at once. Many readers will take a client for the first time and notice a lot going on with them that needs addressing. If it’s more than one thing, they most likely need time to tell you everything. Just like exercising to see physical changes or starting therapy to improve yourself, it takes consistent effort. You cannot get one reading every year and say all your work is finished. Everyone is a constant work in progress. We are constantly learning and growing.  Spirit is not going to provide answers step by step like a tutorial. Instead, the answers will come in the form of signs, symbols, and figures that resemble energy. The interpretation is your explanation that will then enable you to change the energy and your narrative if it's unfavorable. Asking tarot for predictions and future events is possible however the most clear answers will come from the present, where you are in life at the moment and especially the past because it already happened. A lot of times a situation needs to completely unfold in order for you to receive clarity on it. This is because a lot happens in the Universe behind the scenes. Sometimes we’re just not meant to know about it, until its done for many different reasons.

Spirit is not here to validate.

Spirit is not going to provide answers step by step like a tutorial. It’s up to you to decipher what signs mean for you through your own communication with your spiritual team or by booking a psychic or spiritual reading with a trusted reader.

 5. Keep an open mind

Understand that despite tarot cards being pretty standard across most decks, every person will read tarot a bit differently and thus produce different interpretations for the same set of cards. Be open to multiple different answers, messages, or perspectives. Depending on their skill level, experience, or spiritual gifts tarot readers can channel multiple messages at once. I tend to include everything I’m seeing as certain things will end up resonating and others will not. Do not rush your reader to complete your reading. Aside from this being rude, it prevents the answers you need from reaching you in a smooth and timely manner. If you wouldn’t be rude to the person responsible for making your food you absolutely shouldn’t be rude to the person here to help you with major answers about your life. Most spiritual workers like myself will simply refund you and you will end up with no reading. We are humans first and foremost, but because we are spiritual workers, energy is the most important part of our job. If it’s not right for any reason, we cannot do our job properly. Psychic, tarot, or oracle reading is not mindless work. For that reason, our mind and bodies must feel connected in order to be in touch with the messages coming in from Spirit. I recommend booking a personal reading at least once a month if you’re ready to dedicate yourself to improving your life’s journey and you find yourself able to afford it. Many readers like myself offer payment plans, bundle packages, coupon codes, and sales on occasion that can help reduce the cost. Building a safe, trusting connection with your reader will make getting your readings done frequently a pleasant experience. Tarot reading should be something you enjoy, you find helpful, and that you look forward to. Both you and your reader’s energy has a lot to do with that. I personally do not read when I’m feeling anything less than my best because I simply can’t. If you haven’t seen your reader in a while or are not receiving your reading in person, chat them up a bit and make sure they’re okay to do your reading before booking. This is a courteous thing to do as we are human beings who have lives to live and mental health to nurture and protect just like everyone else. It’s nice to be interacted with as people beyond our gifts. Keep in mind not all readers are the same and so these are important things to consider as you don’t want any projection in your final messages. Get familiar with each reader’s types of services, their overall energy, style of reading, and overall business structure to save you a lot of time and headache in your reading experience. Go to the same readers consistently to build stronger community and promote spiritual protection.
